We’re excited to introduce Student IDs – a new feature that allows students to confirm their student status through our Digital ID apps. With nearly three million students in the UK, we’re proud to make student verification simpler for millions.

With a verified Student ID, students can quickly and easily prove they are a student, without having to show a physical student card. They display only the key information, such as their photo, university email, and verified student status, directly to businesses. This approach enhances students’ privacy and security while providing businesses with reliable confirmation of student status.

Student IDs hit the road: National Express buses adopt Student IDs for faster, smoother travel

Ahead of the busy Christmas travel season, National Express has become the first company to accept the new Student IDs. When travelling on National Express West Midlands buses, students may be asked to show their Student ID, allowing revenue inspectors to confirm the student is eligible for the purchased discounted ticket.

Some people are buying student tickets but are failing to provide proof of their student status when asked. With many people no longer carrying a wallet or purse, they often don’t have their physical ID card on them. The introduction of the new Student IDs that customers can easily show on their phone, strengthens student verification and improves the customer experience when travelling.

Adam Rideout, Head of Customer Experience at National Express West Midlands, said, “As a leading public transport operator, we are continually seeking solutions to enhance our service quality and passenger experience. The new Student ID feature from Yoti will make it even easier for customers to provide proof of student status when travelling on our services and benefit from cheaper travel.”

More than just a Student ID

Our Digital IDs offer more than just student verification. The apps also help students and young people prove their age, with each app accredited by the UK’s national Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS).

Students can use their Digital ID for:

  • Buying age-restricted goods including energy drinks, vapes, tobacco, lottery tickets, games, fireworks, medicine and alcohol online (but not in licensed premises)
  • Watching age-restricted films at cinemas
  • Entering 18+ gaming or gambling premises
  • Accessing tattoo and beauty salons

The Digital IDs are also approved by the Home Office as a valid proof of identity for right to work, right to rent and criminal record checks.

Robin Tombs, CEO at Yoti said, “We’re pleased to introduce our latest product feature, helping millions of students around the UK to prove their student status quickly, easily and securely from their phone. Young people can now prove their age, identity and student status, all from one secure Digital ID. We’re delighted National Express West Midlands is the first to accept Student IDs, helping students to prove their status and access discounted travel tickets more easily.”
